Defibrillator Testing with External Paddles

Prior to testing external defibrillator paddles with the ZOLL M2 unit, complete the testing
described in "Defibrillator/Pacing Test" on page 13-3.
Note:
Warning!
Keep hands, fingers, and other conductive materials away from paddle electrode plates
when discharging the defibrillator, or pacing.
Function

Insert a battery into the unit (if battery is not
already installed) and disconnect any AC
power cable to unit.

Turn the Mode Selector to DEFIB to turn the
unit on.
Note: If the ZOLL M2 unit is configured to
power up in AED mode, press the Manual
Defib quick access key. If the unit requires a
password, use the Trim Knob to enter the
password and then press the knob to select
OK. The unit then switches to manual mode.

Connect the MFC to the defibrillator and
disconnect the patient end of the MFC from
any attached accessory (paddles or test
connector). Select Pads as the waveform
display source.

Connect the paddles set to the ZOLL M2
MFC cable. Do not place the paddles
electrodes in contact with each other.

Press the RECORDER ON/OFF button on
the Sternum paddle.

Press the RECORDER ON/OFF button again. Verify that the recorder stops printing.

Press the Apex and Sternum paddle
electrodes together (face to face) maximizing
the contact area between the electrodes.

Put the paddles into the paddle wells.

Press the ENERGY SELECT (+) button.
10 Repeatedly press the ENERGY SELECT (-)
button on the Sternum paddle until 30 Joules
is selected.

If a LOW BATTERY or REPLACE BATTERY message appears during any of this
testing, the battery is close to depletion and should be recharged or replaced.

Response
Verify that the Battery Charge LED on the
ZOLL M2 front panel is not lit when AC mains
power is disconnected.
Verify that the unit displays the SELF TEST
PASSED message.
Verify that a ATTACH PADS message displays
on the screen.
Verify that the ATTACH PADS message
changes to APPLY PADDLES TO PATIENT.
Verify that the recorder begins printing.
Verify that the APPLY PADDLES TO PATIENT
message changes to CHECK PADDLES,
PADDLES SHORTED and the SYNC quick
access key changes to 30 Joule Self-test quick
access key.
Verify that the selected energy increases to the
next higher level.
Verify that the defibrillator window selected
energy display decreases to 30 Joules.
