S 8 1 ca n be operated in a ny one nf three basic modes: VOR .
R ' AV. or ILS. To change from one mode to ano ther. the ro ta ry MODE
selector kn ob on the left side of pa nel is used. T he ILS Mode is entered
automa tica lly whenever an ILS freq uency is cha nneled as the ACTIVE
frequency. The display will a nnuncia te the mode by lighting a message
beside the W PT d isplay. except in the JLS mode. In th is case. the RAD a nd
DST d is plays are bla nked to de note the !LS mode. In add it ion to the stand-
ard VO R and RNAV enro ute (R V) modes. the KNS 8 1 has a consta nt
course width . or para llel. VO R mode (VOR P AR) a nd a n RNAV a pproach
mode ( R

V A PR ). The same rota ry MODE selector knob is used to place
the unit in either of these seco nda ry modes.
All waypoint information. station freque ncy. waypoi nt distance. a nd
waypoi nt radia l a rc en tered with the increment / decrement rotary switch
on the right side of the panel a nd d isplayed in their respective di splays. The
sma ll knob affects the least signi ficant digits while the large knob cha nges
the most significan t digits. T he tent h's position of waypoi nt rad ial and
d istance ca n be changed by pullin g the small kn ob to the OUT position. The
type of data being selected is indica ted by the illuminated ca rets (

located by ei ther F RQ. RAD. or DST. Freque ncy. radia l or di stance infor-
ma tion fo r a waypoint can be selected seq uentia lly by pressing the DAT A
pus h button. The increment/ decrement ~witch cha nges onl y the info rma-
tion being displayed wi th the carets.
The KNS XI ca n store freq uency. rad ia l. a nd distance infor mation for
up to nine wa ypoi nt s. T he waypoint num ber of the data being displayed
is located above the message WPT. The waypoin t number is cha nged by
rota tin g the WPT selector knob (sma ll center kn ob) on the left sid e of the
pa nel. If the waypoint in use is d ifferent tha n the displayed wa ypoint (WPT
blinki ng). press ing the USE button will cause the displayed WPTto become
the way point in use. Addit ional features include an automa tic di mming
circuit to com pensate for changes in ambient light level a nd a non-vola tile
memory. When encrgi7ed. the system will go to the mode in which it was
when switc hed off. In addition. it will reta in a ll waypoint data through a
power shu tdown.
