Conventional
In the conventional measuring approach, the threshold
level is defined in dB for each optical channel individually
and it is defined from the maximum peak power of the
channel (refer to Fig. 4.4). The threshold value corre
sponds to the considered power level for the FBG peak
computation, so that side lobes and ground noise are
disregarded. Although it is considered an expedited way
of performing measurements, the use of this method
should be limited to laboratory applications with reduced
power losses between sensors.
Important
When measuring with the conventional method the confi
guration of all sensors can be affected by local insertion
losses. If power losses are expected (field applications)
the SPD method is recommended.
