Using Terminal Emulation to Retrieve Online Messages

The USB-B port is provided to allow monitoring information online using a terminal emulation
program such as Windows
Type-A connector on one end and a Type-B connector on the other end. This interface is only
supported for terminal emulation use. Do not plug any other device (USB hub, etc.) into the
USB-B connection. Also, to avoid a drop in system performance, do not monitor a live system
for any length of time other than for troubleshooting purposes.

HyperTerminal. You will need a USB cable with a standard USB

connections. The PuTTY
copy of PuTTY is included on system CDs for v1.2 and later.
Pick a time to monitor system information when the system is not in use or at a time
when system traffic is the lowest, if possible.
Make sure you have installed the driver that will allow a PC or laptop to access the USB-
B port ("Installing the USB-B Port Serial Driver" on
Attach a USB 2.0 cable to the USB-B port on the front of the chassis.
Attach the other end of the cable to a PC or laptop USB port (standard USB connector).
Start the terminal emulation program
and set any configuration options the
program needs to communicate with
the Inter-Tel 5000 platform. See the
documentation that came with the
terminal emulation program for this
information. For the terminal emulation
program you use, set the following options if available:
Communications Port: COM3
Bits Per Second: 115000
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None or n.
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Control: None.
Enter the system username (it5k) and password (itpassw). The "OLM>" prompt
appears on the screen, indicating you have logged in to the Online Monitor (OLM) shell.
To view a list of available commands, type help or ? at the OLM prompt, then press the
ENTER key.
To exit, type EXIT or . (period), then press the ENTER key.
