Chapter 4: Specifications

Authentication Supported by BVM

Authentication Supported by BVM
Users do not need to configure anything for authentication beyond setting their username and
password. However, the SMTP mail software package supports three types of authentication
that occur automatically when connecting with the SMTP server. The three types of
authentication are:
This package does not support Microsoft SPA (Secure Password Authentication), also known
as NTLM. If the server supports CRAM-MD5, this is the most secure method supported.
Many SMTP servers validate messages to prevent what is referred to as an "open relay." These
SMTP servers require that the source and destination addresses are valid e-mail domains.
Improper configuration of the settings within the Inter-Tel 5000 may result in rejected e-mail
messages.
End-users may also use anti-spam software to filter out unwanted e-mail messages. End-users
may need to configure their anti-spam software to allow the forwarded voice mail to reach the
user's in-box.

Trunking

The Inter-Tel 5000 platform supports various combinations of trunking across T1, T1/PRI, and
E1/PRI spans, IP gateway trunks, and loop start trunks.

Trunking Capacity and Constraints

The Inter-Tel 5000 platform supports up to 104 trunk groups in DB Programming and each trunk
group supports a variable number of CO and IP gateway trunks. Up to 208 trunks can be
programmed per trunk group in DB Programming, but the actual number of trunks that can be
connected depends on the physical constraints of the system. For capacity, see "System
Capacities" on
Programming Guide (part no. 580.8006).
For hard-wired, non-IP gateway trunking, system capacity is determined by the number of bays
equipped with T1M, T1M-2, or LSM-2 modules. The system provides three bays for multitrunk
modules in addition to two loop start trunk circuits built-in to a single port on the back of the
Base Server.
For software-licensed IP gateway trunking using SIP gateway trunks, actual capacity is
determined by the number of IP resources and the installation of enabling hardware. Without
Basic Voice Mail enabled, the Inter-Tel CS-5200 provides 32 IP resources and the Inter-Tel CS-
5400 or CS-5600 provides 120 IP resources. Based on requirements, the customer provides
appropriate equipment to enable IP gateway trunking. For a detailed description of the hardware
and procedures required for installation of SIP or MGCP IP gateway trunks, see "Installing SIP
Gateways" on
Hard-Wired (Non-IP Gateway) Trunking
In an all-trunk system equipped with required devices and licensing, the Inter-Tel 5000 platform
could support from 2 to 182 hard-wired, non-IP gateway trunks. At the low end of the range, the
system could operate on the two loop start trunk circuits that are built-in on the chassis. No
trunk modules would be installed in the bays. At the high end of the range, 182 trunks would be
available in a system equipped with six E1/PRI spans.
