Connecting T1/PRI and E1/PRI Trunks to the MDF

The installation procedure used to connect T1/PRI and/or E1/PRI spans at the MDF depends on
the type of termination used by the service provider [network provider] and how close it is to the
MDF. T1/PRI or E1/PRI trunks may be terminated on RJ-48C modular jacks [RJ45 line jack
units] or on 66-type terminal blocks.
NOTE Primary Rate Interface for ISDN service requires separate licensing.
Follow one of the termination methods (A, B, or C) outlined below and illustrated beginning on

Method A – T1/PRI Trunks Terminated on RJ-48C Jacks Near the

each service provider RJ-48C jack. The other end of each line cord will later be plugged
into the jack on the corresponding T1M or T1M-2 module.
Make sure the connectors on the ends of each line cord are properly attached. If any of
the wires are cracked or broken, transmission problems can occur.
Mount one eight-conductor modular jack [line jack unit] assembly next to each service
provider RJ-48C jack. For a diagram of the complete layout, see Figure 5-10 on

For each modular jack [line jack unit] assembly mounted in step 1, mount a
corresponding four-conductor modular jack [line jack unit] assembly on the MDF
backboard.
Connect the modular jack [line jack unit] assemblies mounted in steps

If the service provider termination is more than 2000 ft (600 m) from
the MDF, special T1 cable must be used (see
NOTE specifications). For shorter distances, two lengths of standard two-pair
voice-frequency cable (one cable for transmit and one cable for
receive) may be used instead.
