Chapter 3: Product Description

Types of IP Endpoints

Types of IP Endpoints
The following list identifies the types of IP endpoints that operate on the Inter-Tel 5000 platform.
For specifications and illustrations of the endpoints, see "Endpoints" on

Endpoint License Activation Process

Only the multi-protocol IP endpoints require a license to operate on the Inter-Tel 5000 platform.
Although you can program IP endpoints into the database without having an adequate number
of licenses, the system allows only the number of endpoints to come online for which licenses
exist. The system assigns licenses to endpoints on a first-come, first-served basis. However,
once the available licenses have been assigned, the system prevents additional IP endpoints
from coming online. As additional IP endpoint licenses are loaded into software, the system
brings programmed but unactivated endpoints online. For detailed information about setting-up
IP endpoints for service, see the
the Inter-Tel 5000 Features and Programming Guide (part no. 580.8006).
When IP endpoints fail to come online, the Message Print log identifies the excluded endpoint
extensions. At the same time, Alarm #127—Unlicensed IP device failed to come online—
appears on the unit chassis LCD panel and on the administrator endpoint display(s). For details,
refer to the Message Print Diagnostic Manual, part no. 550.8018.

Licenses for Inter-Tel 5000 DEI Units

Any of the three Inter-Tel 5000 platforms supports one or two Inter-Tel DEI units, and each unit
supports up to 48 digital endpoints.
One license is required for each Inter-Tel DEI to come online, meaning that two different
licenses are required for operation of a fully expanded Inter-Tel 5000 system:
Because the Inter-Tel DEI units are identical, the distinction between the first one and the
second one is determined by the cabling order. The unit that is cabled directly to the Inter-Tel
5000 Base Server is the first unit, and the unit that is cabled to the first DEI unit is the second
unit.
In some purchase configurations that enable digital capability, an Enable IP Endpoint license
may be required. For details, contact your authorized Inter-Tel vendor. For licensing part
numbers, see Table 6-6 on

System Alarms for Insufficient Licensing

Attempts to activate an unlicensed DEI unit will trigger Alarm 130, and the unit will not come
online. Likewise, attempting to use IP endpoints programmed in DB Programming without
having appropriate IP endpoint licenses will trigger Alarm 127, and the endpoint will not come
online. Inter-Tel recommends purchasing the appropriate IP endpoint license for each IP
endpoint installed on the system. For details, refer to the Inter-Tel 5000 Features and
Programming Guide (part no. 580.8006).
