Basic Voice Mail

With applicable licensing, Inter-Tel's Basic Voice Mail (BVM) provides four or eight ports of voice
messaging on the Inter-Tel CS-5200 and CS-5400 platforms and up to 16 ports on the CS-5600.
For comprehensive details about BVM, refer to the Inter-Tel 5000 Features and Programming
Guide (part no. 580.8006).

Optional External Messaging Systems

For increased capacity and additional functionality, the customer may want to replace the BVM
with a Voice Processing Unit (VPU) or an Enterprise Messaging (EM) system. VPU and EM
systems can be installed on any or all nodes in the network.
EM is an optional, external system that unifies communication and messaging by providing
access to voice mail, fax, and e-mail messages in the user's mailbox. In addition, EM provides
automatic speech recognition (ASR) capabilities and built-in UM features. EM runs on the
Windows 2000 operating system. For more detailed information, refer to the Enterprise
Messaging Installation Manual, part no. 780.8006.
VPU is an optional, external system that provides integrated voice processing (voice mail,
automated attendant, hunt group announcement and overflow, optional Fax-On-Demand,
buffered SMDR, Record-A-Call, Unified Messaging, etc.). The VPU is housed in a separate unit
that is cabled to the Inter-Tel 5000 Base Server. For more detailed information, refer to the
Voice Processing Unit Installation Manual, part no. 835.2890.
Both the EM and VPU systems allow a caller to leave on a local system a message addressed
to a mailbox located on a different system in the network. The VPU and EM each has its own
internal message queue, similar to a mailbox's message queue, and stores messages until they
can be delivered.
