protocol
Formal set of conventions governing the format of data and the
control of information exchange between two communication
devices.
PSC
printer subsystem controller. Command and task that download
any of the following to the appropriate board:
SCSI controller software
RIP software
CSI software
purge
To delete data from a system.
query
Request for data or other information, entered by an operator
while the system is processing.
queue
List of documents waiting to be processed.
RAM
random access memory. Storage that allows data, such as
documents, to be stored and retrieved directly by address
location without reading through any other data.
raster data
Binary data, usually consisting of dots arranged in scan lines,
according to the print order.
rasterization
Creation of a page's bit map image for printing.
read/write head
Input/output device that reads and writes data in the form of
magnetic dots on the surface of an external storage medium,
such as a magnetic disk.
real time
To process transactions as they are entered into a system. User
and system interchange allow transactions to be processed and
the results returned to the user.
record
Collection of data or words treated as a unit.
recovery
Act of overcoming a problem or error during processing.
Typically, a specialized software recovery routine gains control
and attempts to resolve the error without crashing the system.
remote access
Access to a central computer by terminals or devices
geographically separated from that computer.
character
Character whose bit map is a combination of other bit maps that
have been positioned relative to each other, such as accented
characters and single characters consisting of two or more
characters. A rendered character does not require additional disk
space or font memory.
repagination
In word processing, a function allowing pages to be readjusted
as text is added or deleted from a document. Page length can
be altered or preserved as required.
