B-2
If there is a Spanning Tree state change and the second LEC moves
to "Forwarding" state, it will respond to LEARPs not only for local
MAC addresses, but for the remote MAC learned by the first LEC. In
other words, it would "tell" other LECs in the ELAN, "if you need to
send traffic to the MAC, connect to me."
This would mean that a remote LEC on the ELAN might obtain an
incorrect MAC-ATM Address binding and therefore establish a
DDVCC to the wrong destination; resulting in loss of network
connectivity for some hosts.
ProxyETHERNET forces a LEC on an ATM Uplink module to include
in its proxy list, only those MAC addresses that have been learned
by the EThernet modules in the chassis.
Proxying for MAC address that are both local and learned by LECs
on other ATM Uplink modules may be desired in certain
circumstances. You can use two ATM Uplink modules to bridge
between different ELANs. This is the function of the ProxyAll mode.
* Note: It should be noted that this is not a recommended
network configuration. Communication between
different ELANs should almost always be made via a
router.
