Reel Drive/Lift Pump Efficiency Test
Over a period of time, the gears and wear plates in the
pump can wear. A worn pump will by–pass oil and make
the pump less efficient. Eventually, enough oil loss will
occur to cause the reels to stall in heavy cutting condi-
tions. Continued operation with a worn, inefficient pump
can generate excessive heat and cause damage to
seals and other components in the hydraulic system.
1. Make sure hydraulic oil is at normal operating temper-
ature before doing test.
2. Lower cutting units, engage parking brake and stop
the engine.
3. Install tester in series between pressure hose and fit-
ting suspected bad pump section. Make sure the tester
flow control valve is OPEN.
IMPORTANT: Make sure that the oil flow indicator ar-
row on the flow gauge is showing that the oil will

flow from the pump, through the tester and into the
valve block.
IMPORTANT: The pump is a positive displacement
type. If pump flow is completely restricted or
stopped, damage to the pump, tester or other com-
ponents could occur.
4. Start the engine and move throttle to full speed
(approx. 2500 RPM for 6500–D and 2750 RPM for
6700–D). DO NOT engage the cutting units.
5. While watching pressure gauge, slowly close flow
control valve until 2500 PSI is obtained on gauge.
TESTER READING:
Flow not less than 6 GPM at 2500 PSI.
6. Stop the engine. If flow was lower than 6 GPM or a
pressure of 2500 PSI cannot be obtained, check for re-
striction in pump intake line. If not restricted, replace or
repair pump.
