Term
Definition
A combination of alphabetic and numeric characters, e.g. AB12.
Alphanumeric
Address Code
The unique code assigned by the HA to each address. This code will be
linked to a combination of locality, town and county details on the
Address Table.
Application
A program or group of programs that perform specific tasks.
AT
Address Table.
AJ
Analysis Job.
Audit Trail
A printed report allowing the verification of individual patient records.
A set of patient records, with similar features, that are grouped together.
Batch
Character
A number, letter or symbol on a keyboard, screen or printer.
The way in which your computer handles the transfer of data.
Communications

Communications
The name given to the electronic transfer of data via an electronic link.
Network
Cursor
Character or image on the screen that shows you where you are. Cursors
are usually flashing squares or underlines.
Data
Information.
Database
A large store of information that can be handled by computer.
Default
Automatic setting by the computer if no selection has been made.
ENR
Existing Number Replacement. The name of the project to replace
regional NHS numbers with a national code.
An area on a computer screen requiring the input of information, usually

File
A collection of instructions text or data.
The name by which the file is known to the computer system.
File Name

The name given to a Communications Network used by the Health
Service.
Key
A two-character identifier in the top left-hand corner of the screen, which
determines the screen being (or to be) displayed.
