Disassembling and reassembling

starter motor
Clamp the starter motor in the vise (with soft
jaws) at its retaining lugs.
Unscrew tie-rods (14).
Pull off bearing cap (13).
Remove seal (11) and O-ring (12) and inspect
them for damage.
Pull out armature (1).
Take off spacing washer (2).
Installation is the reverse of the removal proce-
dure.

Removing/installing brush holder

Unscrew hex nut (6).
Take off outer insulating washer (5).
Take off brush holder plate (3) with carbon brush
holder (9), inner insulator (8) and O-ring (7).
Installation is the reverse of the removal proce-
dure.

Replacing carbon brushes

Using a small screwdriver, raise spring (10) and
pull the carbon brush out in the direction of the
arrow.

Note:
Insert the carbon brush with the angled side toward
the spring.
