Change the rear brake fluid/bleeding

Attention:
During the replacement process, the brake fluid
level must not drop below the hose level or else air
will be drawn into the brake system.

Warning:
If the brake-fluid level in the reservoir does fall below
hose level, the wheel circuit must be refilled at the
brake caliper and bled once again (

Draw off the old brake fluid from the wheel-circuit
reservoir (4).
Undo the fasteners on the wheel circuit
reservoir (4).
Screw the filler bottle, BMW No. 34 1 581, onto
the rear wheel circuit reservoir.
Slowly fill the filler bottle, BMW No. 34 1 581, to
approximately 1/3 its capacity with new brake
fluid.
Wrap a cloth around the brake caliper.
Connect the brake bleeding device to the bleed
screw, but do not switch on the unit.
Switch on the ignition.

Note:
After switching on the ignition, always wait for the
BMW Integral ABS to complete its self-diagnosis.
Do not operate the brake lever until self-diagnosis
has completed.
Very gently press the footbrake lever until the
pump just starts up.
Open the bleed screw while topping up the filler
bottle with new brake fluid as necessary.
Pump out the brake fluid with virtually no pressu-
re to begin with, then vary the brake pressure.

Note:
The higher the brake pressure the faster the fluid is
pumped through the system, which means that the
level in the wheel-circuit reservoir drops all the more
rapidly.
When the brake fluid is clear and free of bubbles,
continue to pump off brake fluid just until no

more fluid is visible in the filler bottle.

Close the bleed screw.
Release the brake lever and switch off the igniti-
on.
Disconnect the brake bleeding device from the
bleed screw.
Remove the filler bottle from the wheel circuit re-
servoir.
Top up the wheel-circuit reservoir to the MAX
mark.

Attention:
After changing and/or bleeding the brakes, always
top up the fluid in the wheel-circuit reservoir to the
correct level in accordance with the instructions.

accordance with instructions (

Attention:
After all the work on the brake system has been
completed, run a bleed test using the
BMW MoDiTeC!
Perform bleed test with BMW MoDiTeC
