Calibration

About Calibration

Changes to motor speed, gain, tracking, bandwidth, clock speed, and bar
size measurement to the MS-7100/7180 can be made manually (by individ-
ual menu commands) or automatically to gain and tracking by "Autocalibra-
tion." Of these, Autocalibration and Motor Speed are the most useful for
improving read rates. You can make changes to any of the these parameters
by accessing the Calibration Setup menu, and in the case of Autocalibra-
tion, by serial command or menu command.

Autocalibration

Note: Ensure that the scanner's laser is on and that the label being
scanned is of a code type enabled in the scanner's software. (See "Code
Types Menu" on page 2-22.)
For most applications, Autocalibration is the only necessary adjustment.
This procedure maximizes read rate by automatically cycling through the
scanner's gain and tracking potentiometer settings until the optimum set-
tings are obtained for the highest read rates.
Read rate represents the ratio of good decodes per scans. Ideally, 100% is
the optimum read rate. However, in most applications, variations in label
quality, label placement, etc. will result in some falling off of the read rate.
The object of Autocalibration is to significantly improve read rates, if not to
100%, then to a rate approaching it.
You can do autocalibration by serial command alone or by menu.

By Serial Command

1. Place your sample label at a fixed position at the maximum range from
a scanner as required for your application.
2. Unless you have made changes to parameters that need to be pre-
served, recall factory settings by sending a <KTD>.
3. To initiate autocalibration by serial command only, send a <KT> Command.
Allow some time for the scanner to cycle through the gain and tracking set-
tings. Do not move or disturb scanner or label while Autocalibration is in
progress. When completed, the settings that provided the highest read rate
will be selected.
4. To save the settings changed in Autocalibration for power-up, send a
<KTZ> command.
