MLD Snooping

Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) snooping operates on IPv6 traffic and performs a similar function to
IGMP snooping for IPv4. That is, MLD snooping dynamically configures switch ports to limit IPv6 multicast
traffic so that it is forwarded only to ports with users that want to receive it. This reduces the flooding of IPv6
multicast packets in the specified VLANs. This switch supports MLD protocol version 1. MLDv1 control
packets include Listener Query, Listener Report, and Listener Done messages (equivalent to IGMPv2 query,
report, and leave messages). Remember that IGMP Snooping and MLD Snooping are independent functions,
and can therefore both function at the same time.

Configuring Global and Port-related Settings For MLD Snooping

Use the MLD Snooping Configuration page to configure global and port-related settings which control the
forwarding of multicast traffic. Based on the MLD query and report messages, the switch forwards traffic only
to the ports that request multicast traffic. This prevents the switch from broadcasting the traffic to all ports and
possibly disrupting network performance.

want to receive multicast traffic. (Default: Disabled)
This switch can passively snoop on MLD Listener Query and Report packets
transferred between IP multicast routers/switches and IP multicast host groups to
identify the IP multicast group members. It simply monitors the MLD control pack-
ets passing through it, picks out the group registration information, and configures
the multicast filters accordingly.
Floods unregistered multicast traffic into the attached VLAN. (Default: Enabled)
Once the table used to store multicast entries for MLD snooping is filled, no new
entries are learned. If no router port is configured in the attached VLAN, and
Unregistered IPMCv6 Flooding is disabled, any subsequent multicast traffic not
found in the table is dropped, otherwise it is flooded throughout the VLAN.
