Disk Drive Backplane

To perform this procedure requires you to remove and install the PCI riser card.
Removing or Installing a PCI riser card from its docking connectors, requires a
considerable amount of force. If you are servicing a Model 6C4, it is strongly
recommended that the system drawer be removed from the rack. If you are servicing a
Model 6E4, it is strongly recommended that the system be placed on its side, on a flat
and stable surface. To avoid potential breakage, the system front foot must not be
resting on the surface.
Before performing the following procedure, read "Safety Notices" on page xi.

Disk Drive Backplane Removal

To remove the disk drive backplane, do the following:
1. If you are servicing a Model 6E4, open the bezel door.
If you are servicing a Model 6C4 rack-mounted drawer, open the front and rear
rack doors.
2. Shut down the system as described in "Stopping the System" on page 350.
3. Disconnect the power source from the system.
Note: This system may be equipped with a second power supply. Before
4. Label and disconnect all adapter cables, located at the rear of the system unit.
5. If you are servicing a Model 6C4, place the system drawer into the service position
as described in "Placing the Model 6C4 into the Service Position" on page 355.
6. Remove the service access cover as described in "Service Access Cover Removal
(Model 6C4)" on page 357 or "Service Access Cover Removal (Model 6E4)" on
page 363.
7. Remove the front bezel as described in "Front Bezel Removal (Model 6C4)" on
page 369 or "Front Bezel Removal (Model 6E4)" on page 370.
8. Disconnect and label all cables from the media drives, located in media bay 1 and
media bay 2, then remove the media drives as described in "Media Removal" on
page 399. Note the location of each removed media drive.
9. Remove the media device support shelf by loosening the captive thumbscrew.
Grasp the back edge of the media device support shelf, slide the media device
support shelf back, while lifting it up and out of the system chassis.
10. Remove the processor #2 assembly as described in "Processor Card Removal" on
page 425. If your system is equipped with a processor filler panel instead of a
second processor card assembly, remove the processor filler panel.
11. Record the slot number and location of each adapter.
12. Before handling any card, board, or memory DIMM, be sure to use your
electrostatic discharge strap to minimize static-electric discharge. Refer to
"Handling Static-Sensitive Devices" on page 348.
13. Remove the PCI adapters as described in "Non-Hot-Pluggable PCI Adapter
Removal" on page 374.
