Functions of the Management Module
The management module provides a view of the MSH chassis with
regard to configuration and common areas of control. It also manages
the Ethernet connections, Token Ring modules and some aspects of
intelligent modules contained in the chassis.
It performs management operations, automatically or at the request of
a user, to:
Maintain an inventory of the modules in the chassis.
Control the configuration of modules.
Monitor performance.
Report or act on specific events as they happen.
The Inventory
All modules which are in place in the chassis provide details of their
types and versions to the management module. Any changes in the
number and type of the modules inserted are automatically notified
also.
Configuration of Modules
Full control of the modules is available. Modules may be allocated or
re-allocated to a service as desired. Ports may be enabled or disabled.
Resilient pairs of ports can be created to provide automatic re-routing if
a module fails.
Performance Monitoring
Distributed RMON is available through the management module over
ethernet networks. To use RMON over token rings, you need a Token
Ring RMON Probe (3C18250). Sets of statistics are collected from smart
modules. As the network manager, you can view statistics and follow
the details of how the networks are behaving. Using the control
functions described above, you are able to re-configure a network.
