Device and Port
Selections

Components

As outlined above, you can specify the devices or ports to which a given
configuration template is to be applied, by creating a device or port
selection.
By default, whenever a configuration operation is invoked, the selection
will be based on the devices, end-stations and/or links currently selected
in the map, according to the chosen configuration template, as follows:
For device-based configuration templates, the selection will contain:
all devices that are selected in the map
For port-based configuration templates, the selection will contain:
all ports attached to links that are selected in the map
all ports attached to end-stations that are selected in the map
all devices that are selected in the map. Note that none of the ports
will be selected on these devices by default, unless selected by one of
the previous two points.
The currently selected devices or ports can be viewed and modified using
the Selection Editor dialog box, as explained in
Box"
on
page
584.
A device or port selection can be saved for reuse at a later date. This
allows for the creation of device or port groups that potentially need to
be configured together on a regular basis. For example, all ports attached
to users in the Marketing Department. This, combined with saveable
configuration templates, provides a very powerful configuration feature,
that once defined, will allow the user to visualize and configure the
network in terms of device/port groups and configuration profiles.
Saved selections are independent of both the map and the configuration
templates, and can therefore be reused in conjunction with different map
files and different configuration templates.
This section describes how to use the Bulk Configuration feature of 3Com
Network Director.
