Subsequent Map Updates

Whenever you perform a discovery on a map that already contains
subnets and devices, 3Com Network Director intelligently attempts to
update the existing map. Any newly discovered devices and subnets will
be added to the map, while any existing devices and links will be
updated. See
"The Discovery Process – Rediscovery"
rules on how device and link properties are updated. If you have modified
the position of devices on the current map 3Com Network Director
preserves the layout of the changes you have made and attempts to
position the new nodes relative to your changes. If you are not happy
with the results you can manually move the nodes yourself or you can
force 3Com Network Director to perform a clean layout of the view by
selecting View > Relayout Map.
This section provides examples of how you may use the Network
Discovery features of 3Com Network Director to accurately discover the
areas of your network you are interested in.
You may wish to perform a discovery when the network is not under
heavy load, or when it is most stable, such as at midnight each day. While
3Com Network Director does generate some traffic of its own when
discovering your network, it attempts to keep the amount of traffic to a
minimum so its impact on network performance generally should not be
an issue. However, this may be a consideration for you if you are
discovering a remote site over a slow WAN link.
Assuming you do not wish to manually initiate the discovery each day you
can set up a scheduled discovery. You can do this in one of two ways:

Directly From the Options dialog box

1 From the 3Com Network Director main window, select Tools > Options to
display the Options dialog box
2 Select the Discovery tab
3 Select the At... radio button
