Chapter 5: Mix Bay
The centre section of the console is housed in two bays: mix and output (see Chapter 6
"Output Bay"). The upper areas of both bays tend to operate as an integral unit,
providing audio control for mix and outputs. However, their lower areas are more
independent and encompass automation, auto mutes, control groups, VCA and POP
groups, communications, primary navigation zone and mouse area, and signal
monitoring.
The upper left-hand side of the mix bay is called the mix fast zone, which contains the
auxiliary mix masters, and the upper portion of the output bay - called the output fast
zone - has the main matrix (mix) masters. Full screen support for these sections is
available, but will not normally be required because the hardware provides most of the
necessary control feedback. This allows the screens to be used more productively. The
mix bay GUI screen provides a dashboard or output channel display and the output GUI
screen provides automation and signal processing views.
In conjunction with the upper panels there are two other controllers: an output channel
strip (top right-hand side of mix bay), covering both mix and matrix output signal
routing, and a processing GUI screen operated via the left-hand trackball to control
inserted effects etc. for both mix and main outputs.
The lower control areas are largely self-supporting, with the notable exception of the
automation section and trackball, which require considerable mix bay GUI screen
support. The mix fast zone supports auxes, returns and mixes. At the simplest level of
operation these are paged in banks of 16 to the eight mix fast strips.
