CM Camera
Camera Field of View
Position the camera so that the operating field is in the center of the camera field of view. Optimal
working distance is 1.2 to 1.8 m from the camera to the operating field.
If instruments are not in the camera field of view, they cannot be tracked.
The navigation software displays the camera field of view dialog (see Software User Guide) and
helps you to determine the best camera position.
The camera must not be protected or covered with methods not approved by Brainlab. Do
not obstruct the normal air flow around the camera, for example, by draping or bagging the
camera. Doing so will affect the camera's operational environment, possibly beyond its
recommended thresholds.
Optical Tracking
The camera emits infrared (IR) light from its illuminators, similar to the flash on a conventional
camera. The IR light floods the surrounding area and reflects back to the camera off passive
markers (on passive tools) or triggers markers to activate and emit IR light (on active instruments).
The camera then measures the positions of the markers, and calculates the transformations (the
positions and orientations) of the instruments to which the markers are attached.
The camera transmits the transformation data to a computer. There a software application uses
the camera input to calculate the relative three-dimensional positions of the instruments and the
patient reference arrays.
The infrared LED array is located around the inner ring of the lenses. The IR light emitted by the
camera can interfere with other devices that use IR light (e.g., pulse oximeter, remote control
systems, IR sensitive microscopes etc.). If there is interference, reposition the affected device
and/or the camera so that the interference effects are no longer visible.
Do not transport or store the CM Camera outside the specified environmental conditions,
as this may cause the camera to lose calibration.
The camera must be switched off for at least 5 minutes before it is covered.
