1. Install the piston ring gauge pins into the top
compression ring groove.

2. Use an outside micrometer to measure the
diameter of the piston over gauge pins. Record
the reading.
3. Repeat the procedure for the intermediate
compression ring groove, if its cross section
is keystone-shaped.

If either measurement exceeds specifications, the
piston ring groove is worn, and the piston must be
replaced. For two-piece pistons, replace only the
steel piston crown.

1. Place the edge of a new oil control ring in the
groove. Roll the oil control ring entirely around the
piston to ensure that the ring is free in its groove.
2. With the edge of the oil control ring still in the
groove, use a feeler gauge to check the side
