Using the Nonin 3230 Pulse Oximeter
The Nonin 3230 Pulse oximeter turns on once a finger has
been inserted into the device and does not require a user to
turn it on.
For best results, it is recommended to insert the oximeter onto
the middle finger with palm facing up when putting on the
device, so the neighboring fingers can support the device.
The oximeter LED sensor should be on the nail bed, with the
display facing toward the patient. To assist patients when tak-
ing a reading, a Nonin CorrectCheck™ icon, pictured here, will
display when a finger has not been correctly inserted. If this
symbol appears, slide your finger further into device.
Clinical Notes
As with any oximetry device, readings can be affected by patient-specific factors:
Diagnoses, symptoms and external factors such as ambient light, nail polish, cold
weather, finger calluses and more.

to remove the oximeter from their finger. The oximeter will turn off.
Dark finger nail polish or false nails may interfere with the reading. If a patient
cannot get a reading, remove finger nail polish and try again.
While on the finger, do not press the device against any surface and do not
squeeze or hold it together.
Some patients may have a medical condition that makes a pulse hard to read.
Consider any previous care notes.
Apply warmth to the hand.
Make sure the sensor makes contact with skin.
Change the sensor to another finger.
Ensure the patient's finger is completely inserted into the finger sensor.
