11 Upgrading the 3G module firmware

Chapter 11 Upgrading the 3G module firmware

Due to the rapid progress of cellular technology, it's essential that the modules used in the access solutions can be
upgraded with the latest available features.
Given that the Teldat-3Ge-USB can be configured to operate in different ways ( Teldat mode or Generic mode),
there are two ways to upgrade the 3G module firmware in the device:
(1) Generic Mode: in generic mode the module firmware can only be upgraded from the console of the Teldat-
3Ge-USB itself. This mode is only supported for modules manufactured by Sierra Wireless Inc.
(2) Teldat mode: in this operating mode, the 3G module firmware can be upgraded in two ways, from the router
console or from the Teldat-3Ge-USB console (the latter for Sierra Wireless models only).
Note
The 3G modules manufactured by Cinterion (formerly Siemnes) can only be upgraded from the router
the Teldat-3Ge-USB is connected to in Teldat mode.

11.1 Upgrading from the Teldat-3Ge-USB

Note
This upgrading method can only be used to update 3G modules manufactured by Sierra Wireless Inc.
Upgrading the 3G module firmware in the Teldat-3Ge-USB, is carried out from the device console (accessed
through telnet).
In upgrading, use two files supplied by the 3G module manufacturer: one BOOT file (containing a bootloader) and an
APP file (containing the application). Broadly speaking, the upgrading process is executed in the following way:
(1) The 3G module is reset to put it into teleload mode.
(2) The Teldat-3Ge-USB downloads the BOOT upgrading file it wants to teleload in the 3G module through TFTP.
(3) Simultaneously the Teldat-3Ge-USB starts sending the file to the 3G module.
(4) The 3G module resets again to restart with the new firmware.
(5) Repeat the process from point 2 to point 4, only this time with the APP file.
Note
If for some reason the teleloading fails, the Teldat-3Ge-USB restarts to guarantee the 3G module re-
mains operative. The module starts up with the firmware it had prior to starting the teleloading process.
You can check the firmware you have loaded in a module by executing the showmonitor version
command on the device console.

11.1.1 Requirements prior to teleloading

Prior to teleloading, you need a TFTP server accessible from a Teldat-3Ge-USB, which also has the files (with the
firmware to be loaded in the 3G module). Said files have a .xwe extension and are supplied by the Teldat Technical
Support Services. The manufacturer data and the model of the 3G module is also required.
To find out what 3G module data the device has, execute the showmonitor version command from the Teldat-
3Ge-USB console. The response provides the manufacturer's name (after Manufacturer:), the Model and the firm-
ware version the 3G module has loaded (after Revision:).
Enter a command>showmonitor version
