Tips on handling 4 mm and 8 mm cartridge
tapes
Remove sources of dust and dirt from the vicinity of the system. Paper and
toner dust from printers and photocopiers can be particularly harmful.
Only put cartridges in the drives when you are actually intending to use them.
Operate the drive in streaming mode only, which means that data is read or
written in a continuous stream without the tape stopping.
You can do this by
–
making your backups at times when the load on the system is low.
–
specifying a block size of at least 16K in your backup command.
This reduces wear on the head drum and on the tapes and also means that the
drive does not need to be cleaned as frequently.
You can order cartridge tapes by calling your local Siemens Nixdorf office.
