threshold, the output signal is reduced in level based on the ratio setting. For more information about this
processor, refer to the discussion in Section 9.3.
The compressor has the following features:
• Input, Reduction, and Output level meters — These three meters show the input level, output level, and
amount of gain reduction. These three values are also uniquely displayed on the graph (see the next sec-
tion "Compressor Operation and Graphic Display").
• COMP/LIMITER IN — This button enables/disables the compressor/limiter.
• Hard Knee/Soft Knee switch — This switch sets the shape of the gain reduction curve at the threshold
level. When set to hard, the gain reduction curve changes abruptly at the threshold level. When set to soft,
the gain reduction curve changes gently as it transitions to the final ratio amount.
• THRESH control — Sets the threshold of the compressor in dB below 0 dBFS.
• RATIO control — Sets the amount of gain reduction applied as the signal exceeds the threshold level. A
limiter is a compressor with an infinite ratio.
• ATTACK control — Determines how quickly the compressor reacts once the signal is above threshold.
Short attack times allow compressing on short transients, while longer attack times cause these transients
to be ignored.
• RELEASE control — Determines how long it takes for the compressor to end gain reduction once the
signal drops back below the threshold.
• GAIN control — Adds makeup gain to the output of the compressor. This is useful to make the apparent
volume of the signal the same with the compressor in and out of the signal chain.
• KEY FILTERING Section – This section allows filtering the key signal to make it frequency selective. Use
the key filtering to make the compressor more aggressive in the region emphasized by the key filtering.
The Key In/Key Out switches the key filter section in or out. The Key LISTEN switch solos the channel and
sends the key filter signal to the solo bus. All other solo selections are temporarily cancelled during Key
Listen. The Width control adjusts the Q (bandwidth) of the key filter over a range of 0.1 to 10.

Compressor Operation and Graphic Display

The Compressor's graphic display shows the input and output signals plotted against a graph of the gain
reduction curve. The input level is represented along the X axis (horizontal) by the area in green, the output
level is represented along the Y axis (vertical) by the area in blue, the Threshold setting is represented by the
line with the "T" at the top, and the Ratio setting is represented by the slope of the line connecting "G" and
"R". When this line is straight, at a 45º angle, the ratio setting is 1:1. The left end of the Ratio line has a "G" on
it, which represents the output makeup gain. Finally, the red horizontal bar is the gain reduction display; its
thickness depends on the amount of gain reduction in effect at the time.
