g. Lock the pivot bolt by inserting a new cotter pin
through the nut and bolt. Bend the ends of the cotter
pin over the edges of the nut.
Inspection
Refer to Figure 1 or Figure 2.

2. Check the skis for fatigue cracks, distortion, bends,
deep scrapes or other damage. Repair or replace the ski(s)
as required.
3. Check the wear bars (skags) on the bottom of the skis
for excessive wear or damage. If necessary, replace the
wear bars as follows:
a. Remove the nuts holding the wear bars to the ski.
b. Remove the wear bar.
c. Install a new wear bar by reversing these steps.

4. On models equipped with a removable ski handle (Fig-
ure 2), tighten the handle bolts to 11 N-m (97 in.-lb.).
5. Always install new cotter pins.
6. If the bushings in the lower end of the spindle require
replacement, remove the spindle as described in this chap-
ter. Removing the spindle may damage the bushings.
Outer Steering Arm, Spindle and Bushings
The spindle (A, Figure 4) rides inside the trailing arm
(B) and is supported by two bushings. The outer steering
arm (C) is bolted to the top of the spindle and connects the
spindle to the front tie rod (D). To maintain steering align-
ment, mark the steering arm and spindle before separating
them.
Refer to Figure 5.
1. Support the front of the machine so both skis are off the
ground.
2. Remove the skis as described in this chapter.
3. Note the alignment punch marks on the steering arm
and spindle (Figure 6).
4. Remove the nut and bolt (A, Figure 7) securing the tie
rod to the steering arm and disconnect the tie rod.
5. Remove the pinch bolt (B, Figure 7) and nut securing
the steering arm to the spindle. Remove the steering arm
(C, Figure 7).
6. Slide the spindle (Figure 8) out of the trailing arm.
7. Inspect the spindle bushings in the trailing arm. If the
bushings are excessively worn or damaged, drive out the
bushings.
8. Inspect the components as described in the following
section.
9. Installation is the reverse of these steps. Note the fol-
lowing:
a. Thoroughly clean the trailing arm bore before driv-
ing in new bushings.
b. Make sure to install the washer (A, Figure 9) before
installing the lower bushing (Bj.
