16. Install the end cap. Install the two throughbolts and
tighten securely.
Inspection
Refer to Figure 14.
1. Clean all grease, dirt and carbon from the armature,
frame, drive housing and end cap.
CA UTION
Do not immerse brushes or the wire wind-
ings in solvent because the insulation may
become damaged. Wipe the windings with a
cloth lightly moistened with solvent and dry
thoroughly.
2. Inspect the bushings in the drive housing and end cap.
Replace the starter motor if the bushings are damaged.
3. Check all the O-rings for flatness, cracks, hardness or
other abnormal conditions. Replace the 0-ring(s) as re-
quired.
4. Check the fiber washer(s) and replace if worn, cracked
or damaged in any way. If this washer is not available
from a Yamaha dealership, check with an automotive
electrical repair shop.
5. Check the metal thrust washers for damage. Replace if
necessary.
6. Measure the length of each brush (Figure 23). If the
length is worn to the wear limit specified in Table 3, re-
place the brushes.
7. Inspect the commutator (Figure 24). The mica in a
good commutator is below the surface of the copper bars.
On a worn commutator the mica and copper bars may be
worn to the same level. See Figure 25. If necessary, have
