COOLING SYSTEM

Remove the impeller retaining bolt (A, Figure 7) and
remove the impeller (B).
Inspection
1. Remove the O-ring (A, Figure 8) from the pump
cover. Install a new O-ring during assembly.
2. Inspect the impeller cavity (B, Figure 8) in the pump
cover. Inspect the coolant passages in the pump cover. Re-
place the pump cover if cracked, damaged or corroded.

inspect the impeller (B, Figure 7) for corrosion and
damage. Replace the impeller if damaged or if any fins are
broken or worn. Inspect the splines (A, Figure 9) on the
impeller and driveshaft.
4. Cheek for leakage around the seal (B, Figure 9) in the
crankcase. if there are indications of leakage, replace the
seal.
Installation
Refer to Figure 5 when performing the following pro-
cedure.
NOTE
When tightening the impeller retaining bolt
it may be necessary to hold the primary
sheave so the impeller driveshaft does not
rotate.
1. Install the impeller (B, Figure 7), washer and retaining
bolt (A). Tighten the bolt to 10 N-m (89 in.-lb.),
2. If not previously installed, install a new O-ring (A,
Figure 8) onto the water pump cover.
NOTE
An engine mount retaining screw also re-
tains the coolant pump cover.
3. Install the water pump cover (Figure
retaining screws to 13 N-m (1 15 in.-lb.).
4. Install the engine mounting bracket (Figure 6).
Tighten the retaining screws to 33 N*m (24 ft.-lb.).
5. Attach the coolant hoses to the water pump.
6. Install the exhaust manifold and exhaust system.
7. Refill with coolant as described in Chapter Three.
Heat Exchangers
Inspect the cooling system if coolant leaks are found.
Inspect the heat exchangers for damage and replace them
when necessary.
