2. Remove the frame crossmember (Figure 7).
NOTE
The engine has been removed for clarity.
3. Remove the starter pulley (Figure 8) and spacer.
4. Hold the primary sheave so the crankshaft will not ro-
tate.
5. Unscrew the flywheel retaining nut (A, Figure 9) and
washer.
CAUTION
Do not damage the crankshaft threads when
using the flywheel puller. I f the puller does
not have a centering adaptor on the end of
the pressure screw, use a protective cap.
Make a cap by welding a small diameter
plate onto the end of a stock flywheel nut.
CA LITION
Do not apply heat or hammer on the&-
wheel to remove it. Heat
flywheel or crankshaft. Hammering may
damage the ftywsheel, crankshaft or bear-
ings.
6. Mount a flywheel puller onto the face of the flywheel,
using the three threaded holes in the flywheel
7. Tighten the puller bolt and break the flywheel free of
the crankshaft taper. Try to alternate between tapping on
the pressure screw sharply with a hammer and tightening
the bolt some more, but do not hit the flywheel.
8. Remove the flywheel and puller assembly. Remove the
puller from the flywheel.
9. If necessary, remove the Woodruff key from the crank-
shaft.
NOTE
Before installing the flywheel, check the fly-
wheel for
any
metal picked up by the mag-
nets. Debris stuck to the magnets can cause
coil damage.
10. Spray the flywheel and crankshaft tapers with a rust
inhibitor, such as WD-40.
Figure 6). Position the flywheel onto the crankshaft with
the keyway in the flywheel hub aligned with the key in the
crankshaft. Push die flywheel onto the crankshaft.
12. Install the lockwasher and flywheel retaining nut.
Tighten the nut finger-tight.
13. Install the spacer and starter pulley (Figure 8) onto
the face of the flywheel. Tighten the starter pulley bolts to
23 N*m (I 7 ft.-lb.).

14. Hold the primary sheave to prevent crankshaft rota-
tion. Then tighten the flywheel nut to 11 0 W m (8 1 &.-lb.).
15. Install the water pump drive belt as described in
Chapter Twelve.
16. Install the recoil starter housing as described in Chap-
ter Thirteen.
17. Install the frame crossmember (Figure 7). Apply
tighten them to 48 N*m (35 ft.-lb.).
18. Install the recoil starter as described in Chapter Nine.
Stator Plate and Pickup Coil
Refer to Chapter Two
and test procedures.
Refer to Figure 6.
1. Remove the flywheel as described in this chapter.
2. If the engine is installed in the frame, disconnect the
stator plate electrical connectors.
NOTE
The engine has been removed/or clarity.
3. Remove the stator wire retainingplate (A, Figure 10).
4. Remove the screws securing the stator plate (B, Figure
10) to the crankcase.
5. Remove the screws securing the pickup coil (C, Fig-
ure 10).
6. Remove the stator plate and pickup coil by dislodging
the grommet and pulling the wires through the case open-
ing.
7. Inspect the stator plate and pickup coil for damage.
The stator plate assembly, pickup coil and wires are avail-
able only as a unit assembly.
8. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
Make sure all electrical connections are tight and free
from corrosion. This is absolutely necessary with elec-
tronic ignition systems.

Refer to Chapter Two.
