2. Inspect the hand lever pivot hole. If worn or elongated,
replace the lever.
body for cracks or elongation. If damaged, replace the
master cylinder assembly.
4. Make sure the passage (Figure 22) in the bottom of the
body reservoir is clear. Clean out with brake fluid. Then
apply compressed air to make sure the passage is clear.
5. Check the reservoir cap and diaphragm for damage
and deterioration and replace as necessary.
6. Inspect the threads for the brake hose fitting in the
body. If worn or damaged, clean out with a suitable size
metric thread tap or replace the master cylinder assembly.
7. Inspect the fluid viewing port for signs of hydraulic
fluid leakage. If leakage has occurred, replace the master
cylinder assembly.
8. Inspect the piston contact surfaces for wear and dam-
age. If less than perfect, replace the piston assembly.
9. Check the end of the piston for wear caused by the
hand lever. If worn, replace the piston assembly.
10. Inspect the piston cups for wear or damage. Cups are
not available separately and must be replaced along with
the new piston and spring as an assembly.
11. Inspect the cylinder bore surface for wear and dam-
age. If less than perfect, replace the master cylinder as-
sembly. Individual components are not available.
Assembly
1. Soak the new, or existing, piston assembly in fresh
brake fluid for at least 15 minutes to make the cups pli-
able. Coat the inside of the cylinder bore with fresh brake
fluid before assembling the parts.
When installing the piston assembly, do not

2. Position the spring and primary cup as shown (Figure
21). The cup side fits over the small end of the spring. In-
stall the spring, cup and piston assembly (Figure 20) into
the cylinder bore.
3. Push the piston assembly into the bore and hold it in
place. Install the sanp ring (Figure 19) and make sure it
seats correctly in the master cylinder body groove.
4. Install the rubber boot (Figure 18) and push it all the
way down until it stops.
5. Install the brake lever onto the master cylinder body.
but do not tighten the retaining nut. The nut will be tight-
installed.

PARKING BRAKE
The cable-actuated, caliper type parking brake is
mounted on the chaincase (Figure 23). A separate lever
