Note:
A "connection" is the transmission of voice or data between two endpoints over
Note:
the bearer network. A connection does not include the control signaling portion of
calls, such as that used for dialing, ringing, connecting, and disconnecting. A
"connection" also does not include signaling for the use of telephone features
such as conference, hold, or forwarding. A "stable" call generally is one in which
the connection has been established and control signals are no longer being
used.
When a connection is preserved, it is not dropped when the upgrade interchange begins.
Instead, the voice or data transmission of the call continues until one or both of the callers end
the call. Callers can end the call while the upgrade is still in progress or after the upgrade is
complete. During the course of the upgrade, Communication Manager does not allow the use of
additional calling features on preserved connections.
Note:
Every IP telephone reregisters after an upgrade is compete. An IP telephone
Note:
whose call is preserved during an upgrade also reregisters when the upgrade is
complete, but only after the call also is complete.

Connections not preserved

As with previous releases of Communication Manager, the following connections are not
preserved during an upgrade:
H.323 IP trunks
SIP trunks (for example, trunks established for SIP endpoints that use Communication
Manager and SES for SIP connections)
ISDN-BRI trunks or stations
Unstable calls (Examples of unstable calls include those that are in the ringing or dialing
stage, calls that are on hold, or calls in any state that require control signaling. Unstable
calls are dropped, regardless of whether they are carrying voice or data transmissions.)
SAT sessions
Adjunct links (Examples of adjunct links include those to a CMS, ASAI, or CDR adjunct, a
link to a system printer, or any other links configured using the IP Services screen.)
Also, connections are not preserved during an upgrade that includes a migration of server
hardware. Therefore, connections are not preserved in a migration from an S8700 Server to an
S8710/S8720/S8730 Server, or from an S8710 Server to an S8730 Server.
