CYLINDER HEAD/VALVES
CAMSHAFT/ROCKER ARM REMOVAL
Remove the following:
- Belt case cover (page 9-5)
- Water pump (page 6-9)
- Cylinder head cover (page 8-6)
Rotate the drive pulley (crankshaft) counterclock-
wise and align the index line on the cam sprocket
with the index mark on the stopper plate.
Make sure the cam lobe faces the cylinder side (TDC
on the compression stroke).
If the cam lobe is facing the rocker arm side (TDC on
exhaust stroke), rotate the crankshaft counterclock-
wise 360 (one full turn) so the cam lobe faces the
cylinder side.
Shift the rocker arms to the spring side and remove
the shims.
NOTE:
• Do not allow the shims to fall into the crankcase.
• Mark all shims to ensure correct reassembly in
their original locations.
• The shims can be easily removed with tweezers
or a magnet.
'02 -'05 model: Remove the screw and O-ring from the cam chain
tensioner lifter.
After'05 model: Remove the bolts, washer, PCV joint and O-rings.

Install the screwdriver into the tensioner body and
turn the tool clockwise until it stops turning.
Turn the tensioner shaft clockwise with a special
tool to hold the tensioner in the fully retracted posi-
tion.
