Internal Drives

The RS/6000 44P Series Model 270 has five internal media bays:
v One 3.5 inch diskette bay
v Two 5.25 inch media bays, for CD-ROM drives, tape drives, or disk drives.
v Two 3.5 inch disk drive bays.
A diskette drive and CD-ROM drive are preinstalled in all systems.

Checklist For Handling Drives

Consider the following cautions when installing or removing media drives into your
system unit:
v Use caution when handling all disk drives. Disk drives are more likely to be damaged
during installation and service than at any other time. A fall of as little as .25 inch,
bumping, or rough handling can all cause latent failures.
v Media drives are particularly sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Follow the
electrostatic handling procedures described in "Handling Static-Sensitive Devices" on
page 224 prior to handling the media drive.
v Refer to the documentation provided with your drive to determine if any drive-specific
procedures must be followed, such as setting switches or jumpers, or attaching the
drive to a carrier tray.
v Media SCSI drives must have their SCSI address set manually. Refer to the
documentation provided with your drive for more information on setting the SCSI
address. Refer to "SCSI IDs and Bay Locations" on page 6 for more information on
SCSI addresses in your system unit.
