NOTE:
The starter motor pinion should be pushed
out while the magnet switch is "ON".

Checking the starter motor operation

1. Check the operation of the starter motor
after installing it onto the power unit.

Charging system

Checking the stator coil

1. Remove the starboard intake manifold.
2. Disconnect the stator coil couplers.
3. Install the intake manifold.
NOTE:
To install the intake manifold, see Chapter 4,
"Installing the intake manifold."
4. Connect the test harness (1 pin) to any
stator coil coupler.
5. Measure the stator coil output peak volt-
age. Replace the stator coil if below
specification.
NOTE:
Select any two of the three couplers (leads)
and measure the peak voltage between the
selected couplers. Then, measure the volt-
age between the coupler that was not mea-
sured and any coupler.

6. Measure the resistance of the stator coil.
NOTE:
8
Select any two of the three couplers (leads)
and measure the resistance between the
selected couplers. Then, measure the resis-
tance between the coupler that was not mea-
sured and any coupler.

Checking the Rectifier Regulator

CAUTION:
If the battery cables are connected in
reverse, the Rectifier Regulator can be
damaged.
1. Remove the starboard intake manifold.
2. Remove the fuse holder and disconnect
the Rectifier Regulator coupler 1.
3. Install the intake manifold.
