Keepalive Monitoring

If you have connected two (or more) LANs over a dialup connection, e.g. be-
tween the LAN of the head office and the LAN of a branch office

218), a central server is frequently located in the LAN at the head office.
If this central server is configured such that it regularly sets up WAN connec-
tions to
X4100/200/300
these connections are superfluous (but unfortunately not free) if none of the
hosts in the branch office can be reached, e.g. because all PCs are switched
off. As it is not possible to determine whether the hosts can be reached until the
connection is set up, costs are incurred by the calling party, i.e. the head office.
