Installation Disk Setup

The Setup program on the first installation disk copies all of the MMR libraries and
programs to the PC's hard drive, creating the MMR Program Group. In addition to
copying files, however, the Setup program serves several other important purposes.
Before installing MMR files on the PC, Setup solicits and stores administrative
information such as the MMR logon password and the drive on which MMR is to
install. Setup also invokes MMR Setup to collect configuration details about the
Meridian Mail systems from which MMR will collect information. Once the
configuration details have been validated and saved, Setup solicits registration
information and, then, copies MMR files from the installation disks to the hard
drive.
For Windows 3.1, Setup analyzes and modifies three startup files:
AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, and \WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI. The
modifications cause Microsoft Windows and MMRC to automatically start if you
reboot the PC. Before modifying these files, Setup makes backup copies of the
existing files and replaces their extensions with MMR: AUTOEXEC.MMR,
CONFIG.MMR, and \WINDOWS\SYSTEM.MMR.
Note: You should copy the three modified files as well as the three backup files to a
disk for safekeeping.
Even after installing MMR, Setup serves a number of important purposes. For
example, if you forget your MMR logon password, you must run Setup (the first
installation disk) to replace the forgotten password with a new one. Furthermore,
Setup allows you to clear the existing database, reinstall the MMR program, or
both. Therefore, Setup proves useful for special circumstances (for example, to
recover if files are accidentally deleted).

MMR Setup

MMR Setup primarily captures configuration details about the Meridian Mail
system(s) from which MMR will collect information. The details include such
information as the number of ports on a Meridian Mail system, the number to dial
to reach the Meridian Mail system (if the connection is established using a modem),
and an OM (Operational Measurements) password (which is set on the Meridian
Mail system) to ensure secure access. Other configuration information includes the
number of days to store OM data in the database as well as the PC modem
initialization strings. The system database stores this configuration information; the
system database differs from the OM database, which stores the OM data from the
Meridian Mail system. Typically, the system database is a very small database in
comparison to the OM database.
