Test 2. Sensitivity

Description
C A U T I O N
Procedure
Sensitivity is verified using the following devices:
• Optical power meter (Agilent 8153A/81532A or
equivalent)
• Optical attenuator (Agilent 8156A or equivalent)
• 1310 nm and 1550 nm lasers (>0 dBm output power,
• ±0.005 dB stability for 10 minutes)
Do not exceed +18 dBm source power. The input
circuitry of the Agilent 86121A can be damaged when
total input power exceeds 18 dBm.
Perform the following procedure first using the
1310 nm laser and then repeat the steps using the
1550 nm laser.
1 Connect the output of the laser to the input optical
attenuator.
2 Connect the output of the optical attenuator to the input
of the optical power meter.
3 Adjust the attenuator for a reading of 0 dBm on the
power meter. Record the setting of the attenuator.
Attenuation at 0 dBm: ____________
4 Adjust the attenuator for a reading of –35 dBm on the
power meter. Record the setting of the attenuator.
Attenuation at –35 dBm: ____________
5 Disconnect the fiber-optic cable from input of the power
meter and connect the cable to the Agilent 86121 being
tested.
6 Reset the optical attenuator to the setting recorded in
Step
3.
7 Read the power and wavelength measured on the
86121A, and compare them to the specifications listed in
Chapter 7, "Specifications and Regulatory
8 Reset the optical attenuator to the setting recorded in
