The input module distinguishes between types of error and
responds accordingly with:
Channel passivation if a failure can be allocated to pre
cisely that channel (e.g. with cross-circuiting detection).
Module passivation if the fault that occurs cannot be al
located precisely to one channel and no component de
fect is detected (e.g. communication failure with
PROFIsafe).
Safe shut-down if a single microcontroller detects the
failure of a component that is required to run the pro
gram.
Passivation as a result of the incorrect setting of a func
tion mode.
The input module can only transmit certain error messages as
a function of the selected function mode.
