TIMING CHAIN TENSIONERS

Timing Chain Tensioner Removal

▪ Make sure the respective cylinder is set to
TDC ignition.
▪ Carefully unscrew chain tensioner plug and
release spring tension.
CAUTION
Tensioner is spring loaded.
▪ Remove O-ring, spring and chain tensioner
plunger.
▪ Remove chain tensioner housing retaining
bolts.
▪ Remove chain tensioner housing and O-ring.

Timing Chain Tensioner Inspection

▪ Check the chain tensioner housing and plug
for cracks or other damages. Replace if
necessary.
▪ Check chain tensioner plunger for free
movement and/or scoring.
▪ Check if O-ring are brittle, cracked or hard.
▪ Replace if necessary.
▪ Check spring condition. Replace if damage.

Timing Chain Tensioner Installation

▪ For installation, reverse the removal
procedure.
NOTE: Before installing the chain tensioner
make sure, that the camshaft timing gear can
be moved back and forth.
▪ Slightly turn the camshaft timing gear in order
to get the timing chain play on the tensioner
side.
▪ Slightly screw the plunger in until the timing
chain allows no more back and forth
movement of the camshaft timing gear.
▪ Screw the plunder in an additional 1/8 turn to
reach the required specified torque.
TORQUE: 1.0 kgf.m.
