Chapter 6:
Virtual Mixer

Constructing Virtual Mixes with VMIX

Virtual Mixer (or VMIX) is a cool feature present
in every Element system. In addition to the mixing ca-
pabilities present on the Element console itself, there is
a 40-input "virtual" mixer accessed via HTTP interface
which consists of 40 stereo input channels, a direct out-
put for each channel, 8 submixer outputs, and one master
out. The 40 channels are divided equally among the 8
submixers providing 5 channels in each submixer.
The main mix output provides a mix of all active
inputs, up to the maximum of 40. Each submixer input
includes an on/off setting, a gain setting, and automatic
fade-up/fade-down time parameters. The VMIXer works
completely independently of the rest of the Element sur-
face. In addition to controlling VMIX through its web
page, Axia PathfinderPC software can also be used to
dynamically control VMIX and create mixing functions
based on a variety of system-wide parameters.
Notes for users upgrading from previous
versions of VMIX
In the previous implementation of VMIX (prior to El-
ement software v2.x), the StudioEngine view of VMIX
was mostly status of the fields mentioned above, for the
exception of enabling and assigning channel numbers to
the vmix "outputs". All the other fields were controlled
from the Elements screen.
While not the preferred approach with v2.x software,
this previous method is still available for users that have
become familiar with the earlier interface and wish to
maintain the approach; simply log in to the Engine ID
page of the StudioEngine and set the
Mixer from Element
Element to control VMIX sources.
Element control provides GPIO triggering of the
VMIX, an option not yet available in the StudioEngine
control pages. However, if you control StudioEngine
VMIX using PathfinderPC, GPIO logic may be applied
Block diagrams for VMIX are provided at the end of
this chapter.
