11-40. BRUSH HOLDERS.
a.
To test brush holders. touch one test probe to the brush plate and the other to each brush holder.
b.
The test lamp should light when the grounded brush holders are touched and should not light when
the insulated brush holders are touched.
11-41. GEAR AND PINION HOUSING. Inspect housings for cracks and bearings for excessive wear.
Remove rust. paint or grease from mounting surfaces. Once cleaned. pack gear box with 1-1 4 to 2 ounces of
Texaco No. 1925 Molvtex "O" or an equivalent Lithium soap base grease.
11-41a. NEEDLE AND PINION
HOUSING BEARINGS. Unless replacement of a needle bearing
assembly is necessary. do not remove it from the gear housing. If the needle bearing assembly has been
removed. replacement should be made with an arbor press. and with the assembly pressed in flush with the
edge of the casting. The needle bearing on the armature side must be flush with the side of the casting toward
the armature and the needle bearing on the drive assembly side flush with the casting on the side of the drive
assembly.
The pinion housing bearing should be pressed in flush with the outside edge of the casting.
Whenever the starter unit is overhauled. thoroughly clean and repack the needle bearings with Shell
Alvania No. 2 or equivalent bearing lubricant.
