Clutch System Symptom Diagnosis

Condition
Engine is noisy (Noise
seems to come from the
clutch).
Slipping clutch.
Dragging clutch.
Transmission will not
shift.

Possible cause
Worn splines of crankshaft or inner race. Replace.
Worn splines of countershaft or hub.
Worn teeth of clutch plates.
Distorted clutch plates, driven and drive. Replace.
Clutch dampers weakened.
Clutch control out of adjustment or loss
of play.
Weakened clutch springs.
Worn clutch shoes.
Worn or distorted pressure plate.
Distorted clutch plates, driven and drive. Replace.
Clutch control out of adjustment or too
much play.
Some clutch springs weakened while
others are not.
Distorted pressure plate or clutch plates. Replace.
Worn or damage clutch release
mechanism.
Broken gearshift cam.
