v If you are on a Model 270 or 820: Go to step 3 (See page 286).
v If you are on a Model 830, 840, SB2, or SB3: Continue with the next step.
2. Is the failing battery part of a system unit?
v No: Continue with the next step.
v Yes: Replace the following for the system unit that you are working on:
– Model 840 (system processor unit) internal battery unit pack assembly (see Locations — Models
840, SB3 system unit with processor tower and FC 9079 Base I/O Tower for part number
information and remove and replace procedures).
– Model 840 (system processor unit) external battery power unit (see Type, model, and part
number list for part number information).
– FC 9074 or FC 9079 system tower battery power unit (includes all four battery power units and
all four units should be replaced - see Locations and addresses for the model you are working
on).
– If the problem prevails, replace the symbolic FRU "BACKPLN" on page 284.
This ends the procedure.
3. The failing battery is part of a secondary expansion unit. Use one of the following batteries and parts.
v For an FC 507x or FC 508x:
– One piece battery/charger unit installed, replace with (see Type, model, and part number list for
part number information)
– Internal battery power unit 1 and 2, battery pack (see Type, model, and part number list for part
number information)
Note: When the FC 5058 expansion unit is installed on an FC 5071, FC 5073, FC 5081, and FC
5083, the battery power unit 2 is required.
– External battery power unit 2, battery pack (see Type, model, and part number list for part
number information)
– External battery power unit 2, cable (see Type, model, and part number list for part number
information)
– 9309 general purpose I/O frame with SPCN (FC 9171) - part 21F9380
v For an FC 5065, FC 5066, FC 5074, or FC 5079 expansion tower battery power unit (includes all
four battery power units and all four units should be replaced), see Type, model, and part number
list for part number information.
v For an FC 5033, FC 5034, or FC 5035 expansion tower: Exchange both battery unit
assemblies (includes both batteries). See Type, model, and part number list for part number
information.
This ends the procedure.

Note: See Locations and addresses for the model you are working on before exchanging the battery.
The failing battery is in a secondary FC 5074, FC 5079, or FC 5094 Expansion I/O Tower. The
battery includes all four battery power units.
