Backside Printing Recognition

Films are inserted in the printer with the backing layer on top.
If a film is inserted with the backing layer upside down, the backing layer can
contaminate the thermal head, as it begins melting when the thermal head heats
it up.
Normally it is not possible to insert a film wrong. If a customer however re-inserts
a jammed film, the chance is 50% that he inserts it the right way. See NOTE next
page.
To prevent that a wrong inserted film contaminates the thermal head, the printer
prints a small rectangle on top of the film and checks when the film arrives at the
CDM, whether this small rectangle has Dmax.
In case the density is below a certain threshold, the film must have been inserted
wrong. The printer stops printing, informs the user of back-side printing, to check
the correct positioning of the film and to remove the film jam. Thus the thermal
head is only contaminated slightly, as the film is only printed a few cm on the
wrong side.
