CHECKING THE FLUID LEVEL
NOTICE
Too much or too little fluid can
damage your transmission.
Check the fluid level carefully to be
sure you get an accurate reading.
Wait at least 30 minutes before
checking the fluid level if you have
been driving:
• when outside temperatures are
above 32°C (90°F)
• at high speeds for an extended
time
• in heavy traffic (especially in
hot weather)
• while pulling a trailer
The fluid should be at the normal
operating temperature (82-93°C)
(180-200°F) when you check it.
To check the fluid level accurately,
drive the vehicle about 24 km
(15 miles) if the ambient tempera-
ture is above 10°C (50°F). If the
temperature is below 10°C (50°F),
the vehicle should be driven in
3 (Third) gear until the engine
coolant temperature gage
maintains a steady reading for
10 minutes.
Section 4
Note:
A cold check can be made after
the vehicle has been sitting for
eight hours or more with the
engine off.
Perform a cold fluid check only
as reference.
To prepare the vehicle for a
cold fluid check:
• Let the engine idle for five
minutes if the ambient tem-
perature is above 10°C.
• If the temperature is below
10°C, let the engine idle
longer.
If a cold fluid check indicates
that the fluid level is low,
perform a hot check before
adding fluid.
