Disconnect ECM and proceed to
pinpoint test 1:

Note:
Thunderbird has 4 ignition coils, two per cylinder. Ignition coils are numbered 1 to 4 from the left hand

1 Check cable and terminal integrity:
OK
Proceed to test 2
- ECM pin B17
Faulty
Rectify fault, proceed to test 7
- ECM pin A18
- ECM pin B18
- ECM pin A17
- EMS relay pin 5
2 Check resistance value:
O.8Q to 12Q
Proceed to test 3
ECM pin A06 to
Open circuit
Disconnect relevant ignition coil and proceed
- ECM pin (ign coil 1) B17
to test 4
- ECM pin (ign coil 2) A 18
Short circuit
Disconnect relevant ignition coil and proceed
- ECM pin (ign coil 3) B18
to test 5
- ECM pin ign coil 4) A 17
3 Check cable for short circuit:
OK
Proceed to test 7
- ECM pin to earth B17
Short circuit
Locate and rectify wiring fault, proceed to
- ECM pin to earth A 18
test 7
- ECM pin to earth B18
- ECM pin to earth A 17
4 Check cable continuity:
OK
Proceed to test 6
EMS relay pin 5 to relevant ignition coil Open circuit
Locate and rectify wiring fault, proceed to
pin 2
test 7
- ECM pin B17 to ign coil 1 pin 1
- ECM pin A 18 to ign coil 2 pin 1
- ECM pin B18 to ign coil 3 pin 1
- ECM pin A 17 to ign coil 4 pin 1
5 Check cable for short circuit:
OK
Proceed to test 6
ECM pin A06 to
Short circuit
Locate and rectify wiring fault, proceed to
- ECM pin (ign coil 1) B17
test 7
- ECM pin (jgn coil 2) A 18
- ECM pin (ign coil 3) B18
- ECM pin (ign coil 4) A 17
