Installation and Reference for the BayStack 820 ISDN Router

ISDN Support

The BayStack 820 ISDN Router is specifically designed to take advantage of
ISDN for transmission of data over digital telephone networks. A basic rate
interface (BRI), which is the usual ISDN implementation, consists of two 64
kilobits per second (Kb/s) B channels for data and one 16 Kb/s D channel for
control information.
The router supports bandwidth on demand, a feature that minimizes bandwidth
consumption because a connection is established only if there is data to be sent to
a remote site. The router does not establish a connection until there is a request to
do so. For example, when a user on one network tries to access another network
on your private WAN (or tries to access the Internet), the router establishes a B
channel connection to the remote network. As traffic to the remote network
increases and bandwidth demand increases, the router establishes another
connection to the Internet through the second B channel and routes traffic through
that connection as well. As traffic decreases, the router disconnects the second B
channel. And after a specified period of inactivity, the router disconnects the
remaining B channel.

Connectivity Features

The BayStack 820 ISDN Router supports several connectivity features, including
branch-to-branch access, placing conventional telephone calls over ISDN lines,
remote dial-in access, Internet access, private server access over public networks,
and virtual private networking (VPN).
