DHCP Commands

The Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that
defines an efficient and convenient means of dynamically assigning IP addresses
and other networking parameters for a period of time upon request. In a router
environment, this means either the dynamic assignment of "private" IP addresses
to devices co-residing on the LAN segment with the router or a static assignment
of these addresses according to the station identification (the MAC address) of the
requesting client.
Because a BayStack 820 ISDN Router is, by default, configured with a private IP
address for its LAN connection, the DHCP server is automatically enabled. (The
DHCP function is disabled if the router discovers another DHCP server at
initialization time, or if you have explicitly disabled this function.) DHCP clients
on LAN-resident devices, such as those running Windows 95 or Windows 98,
may then request a lease on an IP address from a DHCP server. As the term
implies, the assignment of the address is temporary. The default lease period in
a BayStack 820 ISDN Router DHCP server is 10 hours. The DHCP client is
responsible for renewing the lease.
The router supports both static and dynamic DHCP assignments. The range of IP
addresses in the dynamic pool from which the server selects an address to satisfy a
request is fixed and extends from 192.168.xxx.1 to 192.168.xxx.229, with the
highest available address assigned first. Static IP addresses must also be within
this range. You can configure and save up to 20 static DHCP addresses.
Note: In some cases, static IP addresses can be higher than 192.168.xxx.229.
For example, you can reserve the addresses beginning with 192.168.xxx.231
and higher for dial-in users.
